Sylvan Lake has enormous opportunities for growth in the tourism industry. Currently, over a million guests visit Sylvan Lake annually, the majority visiting between July and August, spending on average CAD $41.00 per person.

Sylvan Lake is currently home to six (6) primary manufacturing businesses, predominantly comprised of architectural and structural metals manufacturing companies, along with those in agricultural, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing.

Primarily composed of management, environmental, and architectural consulting services, the sector is also represented by a concentrated presence in engineering services, testing laboratories, and health and safety, which principally support other industries.

The 1,200 businesses in Sylvan Lake span all industry sectors. Retail trade is 12% of all employment. Approximately 72 businesses were related to the tourism and recreation sector in the town in 2013.

There are 93 oil and gas companies in Sylvan Lake, in which two primary business streams compose the core oil and gas industry activities: Oil and gas extraction, and support activities for mining and oil and gas extraction.

A municipal collaboration has emerged between the Town of Blackfalds, City of Red Deer, Red Deer County, and the Town of Sylvan Lake driven by a common interest to support businesses and workforce development at the regional level.

The Town of Sylvan Lake is located 24 kilometres (15 mi) west of the City of Red Deer along Highway 11 and Highway 20. Alberta’s two most populated urban areas, Edmonton and Calgary, are accessible via Highway 2, which runs north and south and intersects with Highway 11 and 11A at Red Deer.
